Chapter 6: Capitalize on the Reading-Writing Connection

Connecting writing to reading certainly provides a purpose for writing in all curriculum areas. It is a great way to reinforce information with the class and when the students share, they are hearing that valuable information many times over.

When there are shared writing pieces in the classroom, the students love to read them as Regie Routman suggests. I find that the students like to read books written from students in the past.

It seems that students really enjoy all types of expository information so my goal is to write more using different types of expository material. It makes for interesting reading for the other students.

I enjoyed this chapter!

Carol,

We are on the same wave length with doing more expository writing. I agree with you about how our students enjoy reading class books. Recently, I dug out a few that my 3rd graders in KY had written and all of my students wanted their turn to read them.

Carol, I agree that I need to use more expository writing in my classroom, too. My medium and high kids will enjoy the challenge and I can work with the low ones one on one.

I did a better job of this in 4th grade because I had built certain units around science concepts. I don't have any excuse after this year. : ) I've been in it for 2 years.

Carol,

I am with you in the need to create more expository writing opportunities in my classroom. Maybe we can work
together and brainstorm some ways to write more with our science and social studies units.

I am so glad I chose to read your blog on this chapter. It reminded me that I have many third grade big books we made during writer's workshop also:)
I think my 6th graders will enjoy them also. Any reading is beneficial.

I too have some published pieces from the past and my students enjoy reading them.
